Collection: JULIA BERTRAM

Julia Bertram comes from generations of vinegrowers in the Ahr Valley. In 2014 she began to make wine under her own name from just 1.5 hectares of vineyards. She now farms 4.5 hectares from 54 different parcels in which she either leases or owns. The estate is in full conversion to organic viticulture. This is almost exclusively a Spätburgunder estate, although she does vinify two wines from an early-ripening mutation of Spätburgunder, called Frühburgunder.

Her style is elegant, silky, and floral. There is often tangy, refreshing acid and light and grippy tannins. Her use of oak is never overt and the single site wines can be impressively layered and long. While built around elegance, her top wines are not overly delicate. There is concentration and tension that will reward cellaring and these wines are often reductive in their youth. Her best sites include Marienthaler Trotzenberg, Mayschosser Mönchberg, Ahrweiler Rosenthal, Dernauer Goldkaul, and Ahrweiler Frostberg.
